According to tradition, Bodhi Day honors the day on which enlightenment was being experienced by Siddhartha Gotama, Shakyamuni or the historical Buddha by finding the roots of suffering after sitting and meditating under a pipul tree. Siddhartha became a Buddha or "Awakened One" when he received enlightenment. Ultimately, he found the answers he needed and experienced Nirvana.
